Fashion Over Fifty: Blending Old with New

The best thing about skirts over dresses is that you can create entirely new looks.  The skirt I am wearing today I received over a year ago from Stitch Fix.  This is the third time I've worn it, which really says a lot about the versatility of this skirt because most of my clothes don't see a lot of wear.  I just love the comfort of the soft knit fabric, and the classic black and white design.

The first time I wore this skirt was when we were on vacation in St. Louis.  You can see that look HERE.  In that post, I wore the skirt with a white tank, a sheer, black, sleeveless top, a white cardigan, and black sandals.  The next time I wore the skirt, I switched the top to white and wore sneakers.  You can see that look HERE.  In both of those looks, I brought in color with my jewelry.

For today's look, I stuck with the classic color of black and white again, but brought in a pop of color with my bag.
Now Stitch Fix, and even some of my readers have suggested in the past wearing this skirt with a bright solid colored top.  I can honestly say I've tried.  But I just don't like it and always end up going back to black and white.

So we know the skirt is old, but what is new?  Well three items are new this year.  The cute yellow bag I received from my daughter this past Mother's Day, but I also got the black tee as a JCP doorbuster for only $9.99 and I bought the shoes at JCP for less than $4.00.  How, do you ask?  By waiting until they were on clearance for $16.97, using a $10.00 off coupon, and then my rewards points.  I've had these shoes on my wish list from JCP ever since they came out, and I checked back every week to see if they went on clearance.  It was a risk, because once they go clearance they don't always have your size, but I got lucky this time!
The shoes are a bootie style, with a chunky heel and an open heel.  Very unique, aren't they?  They are like winter booties, but the cut out makes them perfect to wear in the summer.  They are fun!
Because I brought color in with my bag, and the strap of my booties heel had a gold buckle, I decided to accent the outfit with gold jewelry.  The beaded triangle necklace I got in my last Stitch Fix,  and the bracelets are old.
My daughter is so happy I've been getting a lot of use out of this bag.  She was worried it wouldn't go with many of my outfits, but she was wrong!  I've used it a lot this summer.
What I like about this tee shirt is the polyester knit material.  It doesn't hang loosely like a normal, cotton tee.  To some women that may seem like a drawback, but I like the snugger fit.  If you don't like a snug fit, order a size up.  I'm wearing a size small.

It comes in many other different colors and even some prints, and it is a staple in the Worthington department of JCP if your interested in this type of tee.
The tee has a scoop neck, verses a V- neck so it's still flattering, but I don't have to worry about too much cleavage showing.  It is also gathered a bit at the neckline which is a pretty, extra little touch you don't see in many tee shirts.
So what about you?  Do you have a favorite skirt that you can wear year after year by just changing out the top to give you a new outfit?  I'd love to hear from you!

Have a great day!  Amy

  4. I am a big lover of houndstooth, but I don't wear it a lot in the spring/summer... not sure why, but I love it mainly in the fall and winter. But, I love it on you here and that pop of yellow the bag adds is really nice, too! I really love that skirt, too, the pattern is a little different then the usual houndstooth pattern, so fun! I really need to do Stitch Fix again soon.

Oh, and St. Louis is my hometown!!! I don't know where you live, but thanks for coming here to vacation! Hope you enjoyed it!

  6. When I was teaching, I was known as the stylish teacher. Of course, my middle school students loved my 14 different colors of Converse! But, when I retired, my uniform became Patagonia shorts, tees and flip flops. I kind of miss putting together fun outfits. I changed my purse to match my outfits and even the boys would ask me what color I was carrying.

  13. I love this look!! That POP of yellow of the purse pulls the look altogether. Love that you only paid $4.00 for those shoes!! I am a dress girl, myself, only because I would rather not have something around my waist. Weird, I know.
