Fashion Over Fifty: Loving Flannel

Hello!  I wanted to talk about flannel for this week's Fashion Over Fifty because it is absolutely everywhere this season.  Flannel shirts have been a winter wardrobe staple for years, but now it seems to be a must-have for the fashion conscious person.  I must admit, I never really cared for flannel shirts. I don't like button down shirts in general on me, they always feel too masculine for my straight body, and flannel shirts in the past have been always been to thick or stiff for my comfort.  But now they are coming out with thinner, softer flannels which are far more comfortable to wear than the older, traditional versions.

The flannel shirt I am wearing below I found at Express very early in the season, and I'm afraid they are already sold out.  It was such a unique find, I bought it on the spot paying full dollar (but I did use a coupon!), and without even trying it on, for I knew I would never see it available again if I didn't.  It is a very soft, thin flannel, so I actually enjoy wearing it.  And it has a very interesting detail:  black lace sewn into the back, shoulders, and sleeves.  Normally, I would never even consider wearing a flannel shirt outside the house, but the unique detailing in this top make it very appropriate for a variety of social occasions.

I tried to balance the casualness of the flannel shirt with a lot of accessories to make it more dressy.  I wore two silver necklaces of different lengths, and some silver bangles on my wrists.  I added a silver buckle belt for even more interest, and carried an ornate western style purse.  Even the black tank top I wore underneath my flannel shirt has some glam to it,  for it's got a pretty sparkle.

My jeans I received in my latest Stitch Fix.  They are a dark blue straight leg denim jean.
I picked up my purse while traveling out west on my last vacation.  I bought it at a gift shop in Colorado Springs.
These are my new boots that I purchased from J.C. Penney  I absolutely LOVE these boots.  I'm so happy flat boots are in this season, because they are so much more practical for walking in our snow and ice covered streets in Wisconsin.  I love all the buckles and silver studs on these boots too!
Here are some detail shots of my flannel shirt.  I wore it with the messy tuck:  the front half tucked in, leaving the back of the shirt untucked.

In this photo you can see the shimmer in the black tank top.  The extra shimmer always helps dress any outfit up.  I bought this top at Target last season.

Even though flannel is popular right now, wearing it can be tricky.  We don't want to look like frumps or farmers when we leave the house.  Here are some other fun, creative ways you can incorporate flannel into your wardrobe without feeling like a lumberjack:

So, have I sold you on wearing flannel outside the house or barn yet?  Let me know what you think!  I'd love to hear from you.

Have a great day!  Amy
