What I Wore Camping

I bet you were a little surprised by the title of today's fashion post, weren't you?  Why would a style blogger discuss camping clothes?  Well, whenever I take a vacation,  I like to do a special fashion post of what I wore during the week.  But camping, that's a no-brainer right?  Shorts, sweats, jeans, t-shirts...the usual casual wear.  Yet planning a week's wardrobe for camping is an issue, that I approach like any fashion issue:  is the clothing appropriate for the occasion and the weather, and does it flatter me?   Believe it or not, I care just as much about what I look like when I'm camping as I do when I get dressed for a special occasion.  People will see me, and lots, and lots, and lots, of photographs will be taken, so I still want to look as good as I can under the circumstances..... SO WHAT DO I WEAR?

My family and I went tent camping in Northern Wisconsin for five days;  you heard me right, 5 WHOLE DAYS!!!!  I hope to blog about this experience on my Wednesday Travel Posts starting in a few weeks.  I was very limited in the amount of clothes I could pack, yet, I still wanted to wear clean fresh clothes every day because I know how dirty I can get camping in the woods.  I also had to pack for a couple of "city days".  Even though we were sleeping under the stars every night, we would be traveling to other places in the area during the day.

I started packing by picking five outfits that all included shorts, then I added layers:  a thick sweatshirt for wearing around the campfire at night,  a thin sweatshirt, and one rain coat.  I also brought along 6 pairs of shoes:  hiking sandals, water shoes, flip flops for the camp shower, and two dressier pair of sandals to wear to town.

Here are my outfits.  I'm starting with Day Two because Day One was just driving to the state park and setting up our campsite, so no photographs were taken.  I don't even remember what I was wearing!

Day Two:  Thin short sleeve long tee shirt, boyfriend distressed shorts, water shoes, and a baseball cap.

My shoes are special hiking shoes designed for hiking trails that are wet or muddy, walking on rocks or crossing streams.  I've had them for a few years, and use them every time I know we will be hiking any trail that involves water.  They are wonderful.  They can get soaking wet, and still dry out nicely. They also have a nice grip so that I don't slip and fall when crossing slippery rocks.

Even though we were tent camping, we still had access to a shower every night.  I never did my hair because I knew I'd always have a cap on for sun and bug protection.  The only make up I usually had on was a tinted moisturizer (for sunscreen), a little blush, and a lip balm.

The first day of our trip was the nicest and warmest day.  And I think it was the only day it didn't rain.  But thankfully, most of the rain was at night, so we were able to still enjoy our trip.  Because the weather was so nice this day, I didn't need to worry about layers for cooling or warmth, and I just wore the tee shirt.  It wasn't like that for the rest of week!

If you recognize this top, it's because I wore it last fall HERE and HERE.

I think I embarrassed my son by wearing a baseball cap most days, cause it's not normal for me to wear one.  But I find baseball caps are the perfect hiking caps because the wide long brim shields my eyes and face from the sun, and it fits tight to my head so that the wind never blows it off.  Most of my other hats always blow off my head from the wind, and the last thing I wanted to do was chase a hat down a waterfall!

Day Three:  Linen shorts, sports bra, tank top, sheer sleeveless blouse, hiking sandals, and a baseball cap.

The next day involved more hiking in waterfalls.  This day I switched to my sandals because my daughter Ashley wanted to borrow my water shoes so she could go in the water.  The falls on this trail were nice to swim and wade in.

The weather was cooler in the morning, so I started the hike wearing a sleeveless sheer white shirt.  I would have loved to have been able to wear this shirt all day as I don't feel comfortable wearing tanks in public, but as the temps heated up, the clothes came off!  Because the tank is so thin and light weight it went directly into my back pack no problem.

Day Four:  Lightweight sweatshirt, shorts, hiking sandals, tank top, hiking sandals, head band.

On day four, we drove to Michigan, and it was a cooler, dreary, off and on rainy day.  It was the perfect day to wear my new lightweight hooded sweatshirt that I picked up in Vail, Colorado on my last vacation.  Because it was thin, I didn't get too hot hiking in it, yet it helped protect me from the rain and mosquitoes.

I didn't wear a hat this day because there wasn't much for sun, but I did wear a headband to help hold my hair back.

I had my sweatshirt on for most of the day, but there were times I did get a little warm, and then I just tied it around my waist.

Day Five:  Boyfriend jeans, lightweight hooded sweatshirt, brown flat sandals, sheer floral top, orange tank.

Well by Day Five we were all getting tired of hiking in the woods looking at water falls and we decided to have a city day.  The town of Bayfield is located right on the largest of the great lakes, Lake Superior, so the temperatures fluctuated constantly while we there.  If the wind was blowing right off the lake, we were freezing, but if the sun came out strong, we were hot.  It was actually very frustrating and I was constantly putting my jacket on and taking it off.

I can't say enough about this hoodie that I picked up at a gift shop in Vail.  I usually hate to wear sweatshirts because they are so thick and bulky, especially around the stomach area, and I feel so unattractive when I wear them.  But like I said before, this sweatshirt is a thinner material (yet it's still warm), and I love the length.  It doesn't bulk up around the stomach area like the traditional sweatshirt does.  I hope to get a lot more use out of this hoodie this fall/winter, and wear it not just for camping trips.

Here is the sheer floral top I wore under my sweatshirt.  The last time I wore this top was with a pair of tan shorts.  You can see that look HERE.

And finally, a going home outfit.

Day Six:  Black dress shorts, short sleeve top and camisole, black sandals.

On this day, we had to clean up our campsite, head back home (about a three hour drive), go out to lunch and stretch our legs a bit in a cute town, and then stop at the animal shelter on our way home to pick up our new kitty Jackson...so I had to look somewhat presentable!

I decided to wear sweats while cleaning up the camp site, and not change into nicer clothes till we were ready to leave.  That kept my new clothes from getting dirty, and I had something nice to wear strutting about town.

Well I hope you enjoyed this post.  There's been a lot of talk in"Blog Land" regarding whether or not Blogger's really wear the outfits they feature or are they just dressing up for the camera.  The majority of my posts are outfits that I really wear, and if they are not, I always tell you!  Sometimes I just borrow clothes from my daughter or I put an interesting outfit together,  just to have something different to share so I don't bore my readers.  I know I get tired of fashion blogs if their style becomes too predictable, so I don't want to do that to my readers!

Sheer Floral Top and Linen Shorts

It sure has been a hot summer so far in Wisconsin.  Kind of scary considering it's only June.  We are not use to hot temperatures like this in the north.  We've had several days in the nineties already, and more to come this weekend.  Which brings me to my topic:  what do I like to wear when it's broiling hot outside?

My favorite items to wear when the temperature rises are linen shorts, thin camisoles, and a sheer top to wear over the camisole with sandals or flip flops on my feet (or better yet, bare foot).

Everything I'm wearing in today's post is old except for the floral top.  I picked it up on my last vacation in Florida for only $6.99.  I love sheer tops because they provide coverage, yet keep me cool and comfortable as well.

The linen shorts are from J.C. Penney and were last seen in THIS POST.

I accessorized with yellow jewelry because there was a hint of yellow in the top.  I carried a nude cross body bag.

Linen is the perfect fabric to wear during the summer.  Here are some interesting facts I found out about the benefits of wearing linen clothes in summer:

The weave of  linen fabric lets more airflow through the fabric and allows the body to breathe.

Linen is capable of absorbing moisture and quickly yielding it again.  Meaning, it will absorb your sweat and never field wet as water evaporates off linen quickly.

Linen is a good conductor of heat for it quickly allows heat to escape through the fabric.

So there you have it...the perfect fabric to wear during the summer:  LINEN!  And a combination elastic/drawstring waist doesn't hurt either!

Another Easter Outfit

In last week's fashion post,  I showed you the outfit I planned on wearing Easter Sunday.  I still plan on wearing that outfit, but due to an oversight, my Easter plans have changed slightly so I won't be needing a second Easter outfit.  Long story short, we have been driving to Milwaukee every Easter weekend for years to see an Easter musical.  I automatically made hotel reservations for the holiday weekend never bothering to look up the dates of the musical this year because it's ALWAYS on Easter weekend.  Well I was on Facebook this weekend and I noticed everyone posting pictures and talking about the musical.  "What?"  I thought.  "How can it be this weekend?  Easter is next weekend!".  So I went on the church's website and sure enough, they moved the performances to a different weekend for the first time in over thirty years.  UGH!  I was so upset!  Everyone on FB was saying it was the best musical the church had ever done.  I was so disappointed we missed it.  Then to make it worse, our hotel room is non-refundable!  So we decided to go make the best of it and go to the city anyway Easter weekend and spend time with old friends.  We will still get to see our kids too plus take in the Easter Sunday Morning service.  But, I'm still disappointed to miss the musical.  We look forward to that every year!

Anyway, I bought a second outfit that I will not be needing now since I won't be attending the musical.  My husband said "Wear it anyway".  And I said "No, it's too dressy just to hang out with friends".  I have no idea when I'll wear this outfit now as my life pretty much of consists of going out to eat and shopping.  I might be able to wear it to church, or on one of our travels.  I know some of you are probably thinking, "It's not dressy at all!"  But in my small back woods world, it's dressy.  But just because I didn't wear it doesn't mean I can't show it to you all, so here it is!

The outfit was planned for a four hour car drive and a three hour church service/musical so that is why I chose elastic waist pants and not a dress.  I picked up these pants at Ross and they came in S, M, L.  I bought the size M and I thought they looked like they fit great in the dressing room mirror, but when I look at these pictures they seem a little big to me.  My husband didn't think so, what do you think?

The floral top I picked up at T.J. Maxx.   I was very drawn to the poppy print and how it's a floral but not a "in-your-face" floral if you know what I mean.  It's a very subtle floral.

For outer wear I chose my new black embroidered bomber jacket.  I previously showed it you before in THIS POST.

The black in the top goes well with the black jacket and the black in the shoes.

For jewelry I chose this long peach pendent necklace to draw out the peach in the top.

I chose the beige handbag and just turned it so the periwinkle side faced inward.

I also wore a simple gold and diamond bracelet on my wrist.

The top is sheer, so I wore a white lace camisole underneath.  It has three quarter length arms with elastic in the hem.  It's a very nice lightweight top for spring.

I chose to wear my color-blocked black and tan pumps since I would be mostly sitting.  These shoes are so uncomfortable, I can never wear them if I plan on being on my feet much.  I really need to stop buying pointy-toe shoes.  They do not work for me.  But, they are so cute I can't help myself!

Next I want to show you the outfit with flats.  Originally, I was going to wear the outfit with flats to be more comfortable, but after I saw these pictures I said "Nah! My legs look too short".  It could have been the picture angle and not the flats at all My husband took the pictures straight on instead of shooting up or down like he usually does (Photography can be so deceiving! After years of fashion photography we know how to take pictures to make me look a lot thinner and taller than I am in real life!).  But he didn't like the outfit with flats either and told me to try it with heels, so I did.

I thought I would still show you the pictures because some women only wear flats and would like to see the same outfit with different shoes.  If you notice, I also have a different necklace on as well.  After I saw the pictures, I just thought the necklace was too dressy and switched over to the pendant.

These are such cute flats, I really don't get much use out of them though.  They are not very comfortable and they are so sparkly I can't wear them with too much.  I bought them at Old Navy a couple of seasons ago.

So which way do you like the outfit better?  With the flats or the pumps?  What about the necklace?  Which one do you prefer?  I'd love to hear from you!

Pretty In Florals

This is a new floral top I purchased from  JCPenney before I left for my Myrtle Beach Vacation.  I saw it on their website and thought it was perfect for my body type.  However, I ordered my usual size Medium and I feel it's a little too big in the stomach area.  I already cut the tags off so I can't return it.  I looked at the construction of the top and I think I can open up the seems and cut the extra fabric out and make it a little smaller.  When I will do that, I have no idea as spring garden season is here and I am super busy.  So I might just wear it as is.  What do you think?  Fix it or leave it?

The top is by Liz Claiborne (my favorite JCP designer).  I paired it with my grey jeans, pink clutch, and nude sandals.

I picked up these new grey jeans this season;  they are also by Liz (like I said, she's my favorite!).

My nude wedge pumps are old (Nine West).

The pink handbag is from Charming Charlie's and was a gift from my daughter.

Here is a closeup of the print on the blouse and the pretty yoke neckline.  The top is sheer (aren't they all these days?) so I wore a lace camisole underneath.  I really like this watercolor floral print.

Both the top and the jeans are sold out on the JCP website.  I did find a similar top HERE.

Blue & White Florals For Spring

I am back with my third piece from my March Stitch Fix box:  this pretty blue and white floral top.  On Monday I shared a pair of printed pants and a white denim jacket that I got in that box.   I was really happy to see all spring items in my latest Fix as I am so over winter (although you wouldn't know it by all the snow we still have! ).

The top is by Vince Camuto.  It is sheer and it did not come with a lining or a shell to go with it, which was a negative for me.  I wore one of my own tanks underneath, but even after spraying my tank heavily with Static Cling, I still had major issues with the top clinging to my tank.

I styled the top with white jeans and white sandals to complete my spring look.  I can't wait till I can wear this stuff for real.  It's starting to warm up, but with all the snow and rain it's a real mess out there!

The sleeves have a pretty ruffle detail.

The flowers are a petite white.  There's also a row of tiny white buttons up the neckline.  I skipped a necklace since there was already so much going on in this top and opted for a silver bracelet and rings instead.

My white sandals were purchased last year.  Forgive the unpainted toes, I do not paint my toe nails until it's officially open-toe shoe season.

Overall, I thought it was pretty top but I didn't think it was that flattering on me.  I was also bothered by the static cling and the fact that the top was not lined.

On Monday I will show you one more piece I received from this Fix and then on Friday I'll review the entire box and let you know the results of my Instagram Poll.  I'll also tell you what I kept and what I sent back.  You will be very surprised!

If You'd like to try Stitch Fix, use my Referral Code to receive $25.00 off your very first box.
