How to Style Ponchos and Wraps with Ageless Style

Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women "over a certain age".  Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme.  This month's theme is "Ponchos and Wraps" and was picked by Joanne.

Ponchos and wraps are a fashion trend that seems to come and go through out the years.  It's almost as if the trend can't seem to make up its mind "Am I "In" or am I "Out"?  The first time in my life when I remember seeing a poncho was when I was a little girl and Laurie Partridge wore one on " The Partridge Family" television series.  That was in the seventies.  I really didn't see anyone wear them again until my daughter was in high school, that would have been the late 90's/early 2000s.  I remember purchasing a thick, short poncho.  I wore it a few times, but quickly donated it because "it made me look fat".  (I wonder how many clothes have been tossed by women for that reason alone?  ðŸ˜‚).  And here we are, another twenty years have passed and ponchos/wraps are back in style.  Now, they never really go out of style.  In certain geographical areas like the American West or Europe people consistently wear them.  But like all clothes, they do trend in and out of popular style.

In my brutally cold climate of Wisconsin, ponchos/wraps are actually very impractical.  We have very short transitional seasons, where a poncho/wrap would get the most use.  Our temperatures are either hot or cold, with a couple of weeks in-between where one could even where a poncho.  They don't fit well under coats, so wearing them in winter is usually not an option either.  Nevertheless, I do have ONE!  I purchased this black hooded poncho in 2015 from a small boutique for $25.00.  I learned my lesson from the thick poncho I purchased in the 90's and this time I grabbed a very thin knit long poncho is a slimming black color.  And guess what?  It actually hung around in my closet for quite a few years!

When putting this outfit together,  I followed the one fashion rule I have for myself:  'When wearing something long and baggy on top, wear something thin and slimming on the bottom.'  So I paired my poncho with these black and grey plaid leggings from Stitch Fix.  Because it was cold out the day these pictures were taken, I wore tall black boots to help keep my legs warm.

The poncho is long enough to cover most of my butt, which I definitely want to do when wearing leggings.  This poncho also comes with a fuzzy hood.  I know it's hard to see in the picture because of the black color, but it's super cute.

Underneath the poncho I wore a medium grey turtleneck.

As I stated in my opening paragraph, ponchos can add some unwanted pounds.  I find belting it at the waist makes me look slimmer in a poncho.  You can do this with wraps too!

I added a long silver pendant necklace to accessorize the outfit.

And just for fun, here are a couple of other ways I have styled this poncho in the past.

With a skirt, tights, and booties.

                              With Brown Denim and Booties

And now be sure and check out what all the other ladies in the group are wearing and be sure to link up your outfits with us as well!

  2. You styled it really well and great idea for belting too! I've never owned or tried on a poncho before. Not sure how well it would look on a petite woman like myself. Might have to try one on if I ever see one when out shopping.
By the way, loving all those plants!!

    1. Thank you. A shorter poncho might work for you. They are fun to try on, but not for everyone. I forgot to mention they work well for travel because if it's a thin knit like mine, they fit well in a purse. I used one when I was in Italy. The mornings were cold but the afternoons were hot. I would wear a poncho in the morning, then take it off and shove it in my purse in the heat of the afternoon.

  3. I LOVE that your poncho has a hood! What a fun feature. I too find them hard to wear in our cold winter climate but I do like them so much!

    1. Thank you! Yes, it was the hood that sold me on the poncho. I never saw that before.

  4. I love that this one has a hood, Amy. What a whimsical detail that makes it perfect for your weather.
I've only started layering more and more with these pieces, because I used to not wear them much. It's been fun to experiment with ways to wear them.

    1. Thanks Jodie. The hood was definitely one of my deciding factors on whether or not to buy this poncho. I would think ponchos would be very useful in your climate.

  5. You can never go wrong with a black poncho and I love the idea of using a thin belt with it. I only really started wearing my 3 this year as it works well as a layer here in the south.

  7. this has been my dressing philosophy for about 3 years now - 'When wearing something long and baggy on top, wear something thin and slimming on the bottom.'

probably 80% falls into this category. i've never felt more comfortable, relaxed, and [fairly!] pulled together!

    1. Yup, it's the only fashion rule I have for myself. It works well for me!

Funny how the fashion gurus are telling us that they are trending for 2022!

    1. I know. Sometimes I wonder if the "fashion gurus" even pay attention to what people are really wearing.

  9. I love the look of ponchos but not on me. Like you said it can add unwanted pounds and it's a true statement in my case. I love your idea of belting a poncho as well as your style rule. I agree that if the top is loose the bottom should be fitted. Amazing at how fashion repeats itself, huh? Now I understand what my mom meant. Lol

    1. I so agree. It took me awhile to find the right poncho for me. The thin knit and the length made all the difference.

  15. So clever to belt your poncho. I know I have tossed more than my share of clothes that made me 'look fat.' I much prefer clothing that gives me a 'waist' to the boxy styles that seem to be popular now.

Those leggings are really fun, too. I thought they were blue and green!! Better have my eyes checked, huh? The hood on your poncho makes it a true wrap, rather than just a layering piece.

    1. Oh, those boxy styles look awful on me. I refuse to buy them. The leggings do look blue and green in the photos, don't they. But they are not, they are black and grey.

  16. A really fabulous look, Amy! I had a poncho as a kid, but haven’t tried one as an adult. Thanks for the tips!

  17. That's such a cute poncho on you and it goes with so much - I can see why you kept them! It looks great belted! :) I don't have any ponchos but do love a kimono as a cosy layer before things get too cold!
