How to Style a Teal Duster

This month in lieu of an "Ageless Style" post I decided to go solo from the group.  Their theme for September is "Back to School" which we also did last August 2021 (see this post if you missed it) and I really struggled with it the first time so I didn't want to repeat it.  As an almost 60 year old, I don't go back-to-school, or even back-to-work for that matter, so I just don't feel the theme applies to me or my readers, and that's ok.  I love participating in group challenges, but if one doesn't work for me or my blog, I can take the month off.  My other group I participated with, "Stylish Monday", has decided to fold, so I'm thinking it might just be time for me to be flying solo more.  Pre-covid, I use to do two fashion posts a week, but when Covid hit and my lifestyle changed and I didn't need new clothes so often, I dropped to two fashion posts a month.  Now, if the economy doesn't come to a crashing halt or WWIII doesn't happen, life is normal again so I'm getting out and about more, and maybe I can go back to doing more fashion posts.  They are almost always my most popular posts, and I have yet to figure out why.  Why anyone would want to see this old lady with a normal body type play dress up, I have no idea. 😁

Anyway, enough blog business and onto this month's fashion post.  I purchased this teal duster at a local shop last spring, thinking it would be great to wear as a lightweight cover on those chilly spring days.  But I never ended up wearing it because we did not have a spring this year.  Our spring was more of an extended winter and I required more of a cover up than this flimsy thing.  But now that it is almost fall (fall is September 22, so it's not here yet all you people who think it's fall the second the kiddos are back in school) and the weather is a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, this duster has come in handy.

The duster is styled like a long shirt.  It has buttons all the way down and tab sleeves.  It's too short to wear as a dress, plus it has long slits on the sides, so it always needs to be worn over something.  It is also made of a see-thru gauzy material, so yea, you always need to wear something underneath.  It would probably make a great beach cover up, but this Wisconsin gal doesn't hang out at the beach too often.

When I saw it at the store they had it styled with a little black dress.  I thought that was super cute too, but I wanted to try it with all-white my first time wearing it.  There will be plenty of time to wear this duster with darker colors later in the year.

I really love the length.  It might not work well on a petite person, but on my 5'7 frame it's perfect.  Because it goes way past the torso, I could even try styling this with leggings in the fall.

I styled the teal duster with a column of white.  My white tank has pearls in the V-neck so I skipped a necklace and chose to wear statement earrings instead.  My earrings have both a teal and nude color in them, so they match both the duster and my sandals.

I carried the all-white theme through by carrying a white handbag, but I chose a nude sandal to elongate the leg.

I was so happy I finally got to wear my teal duster as I spent a small fortune on it ($50, shush, don't tell my husband 😁).  It was one of those rare impulse buys, I'm usually far more frugal on my clothing purchases as most of my regular readers know.  But, I wanted to support a small business, and a splurge now and then, isn't so horrible.  I purchased it from "Mustard Seed Boutique".  They have a website so you can order on line too.  They have the cutest things, but unfortunately most of it is on the pricey side.

Before I leave I wanted to show you other ways to wear a teal duster.  I will be stealing some of these ideas myself.

As I mentioned earlier, teal goes great with black:

With a neutral top or bottom, and a lighter denim:

And you don't have to always pair teal with neutrals, black and whites, you can also wear teal with other colors too...if you're bold enough.  I love color, but I always prefer to pair color with a neutral.  Here are some other colors Teal goes with:
I love the color teal.  It's such a beautiful, rich color.  What about you?  Do you like the color teal?  How would you wear it?  I'd love to hear from you.

Have a Great Day!  Amy

  1. Amy, this is a gorgeous duster! I love teal and the color looks so great on you! It is beautiful layered over all white, but I also really like the teal and black combinations. As for "why anyone would want to see this old lady with a normal body type play dress up"...we all want to see that because we all are exactly that! And playing dress up is fun and keeps us feeling youthful but with the extra wisdom of age! Great post, my friend!

    1. Thank you Shelbee. I love the teal and black combo too and I will definitely wear that this fall. And I hope you realize my self-deprecating comment was in jest...I so agree with you. I was initially drawn to fashion blogs for the same reason. I wanted to see what real women were wearing and how they looked in clothes...especially older women. I get so tired of older women brands like Talbots and Chicos consistently using younger women in their advertisements. And I'd like to see more normal weights too. It's like we have to choose between 5'10 and 125 lb women or plus size women...which I'm neither.

  2. These pictures are absolutely beautiful and what a great buy this was even if a bit on the expensive side. Sometimes we just need to treat ourselves!! Love how you styled it with all white clothing and the nude shoes are perfect! I do love teal but only have a couple teal pieces in my closet. I think it's a great color for fall, actually, (but of course spring too)!

    1. Thank you! I'm glad you think it was a great buy, because I still feel guilty about spending that much money on one item. But I think it's something that will be in my closet for a long time, so hopefully I'll get my money's worth. It is a good color for fall, isn't it?

  3. I think it's nice to support the small businesses and I always rationalize it's the time to not worry about the budget as much.
I LOVE the duster. It'll be perfect all year long!!
And being an older women with a regular body is exactly what we need to see more of. That's why I love having my mom and Lesley as part of my site....more women want to see images that look like them.

    1. Thank you Jodie! It's so nice to have friends who support my habit...ha ha! Yes, I agree with you. I love seeing regular women model clothes. With the usual fashion models I always have to think "Well, it looks great on her, but what would it look like on me?"

    1. Thanks so much! My usual wardrobe is sweatpants or soft shorts, with a tee, cardigan, and comfy shoes, I only play dress up twice a week.

  8. I've been trying to shop small businesses at least once a month and yes even if it is a little pricier I'd rather do that than spend that equal amount on several things on Amazon. I love the color of this duster and I think it will be very versatile so worth the money.

    1. You are so right Mirelle. Maybe I really need to rethink how I shop, especially since I don't need so many clothes anymore. I can afford to shop small businesses more.

  13. Yes I can relate to you and clothes. Even before COVID, my family does not go out much. We live in a smaller town and lots of the areas around us are just parks or empty lots. So it's hard to style anything these days. And I am sorry to hear about one of your blogger groups folding. But flying solo is always fun too! But back to your outfit, I love your teal cardigan. It's a beautiful color and the length is great. The way you styled it with an all white outfit is perfection and really creates a stunning look. I hope you are having a great start to your week so far and happy Monday!

    1. Same here. I love clothes, but it is hard to justify buying a lot when you don't go out much. But it seems every vacation, I use just about everything in my closet. Thanks so much.
