How to Style Summer Clothes For Fall

On last Friday's fashion post "Shopping Summer Clearance",  I shared a few of my summer clearance finds.  Today's top is another one of those clearance items, but I wanted to share how I styled it for fall.  Now it's still too warm here in Wisconsin to wear jeans and a jacket unless your up in the wee hours of the morning or late at night, so this outfit was put together purely for this post.  However, I have worn this top before so if you follow any of my Instagram stories you might have seen a selfie of it for  #OOTD.  I wore it shopping with a good friend, but I styled it with boyfriend jeans and flats, and no jacket!

But for this post I wanted to show how you could easily style a short sleeve top for cooler weather just by adding jeans and jacket.  A top like this transitions so well into fall because of the dark color.  And I prefer wearing a short sleeve or a sleeveless top under jackets because it is less bulky and therefore more comfortable.

My jacket is by Guess and is three years old.  The last time I showed it to you was in THIS POST.  It was one of my more popular pins too!

Most modern jackets are shorter than our tops, and it's perfectly o.k., if not fashionable, to let you top hang out from underneath the jacket in the back.

Because my top has brass embellishments on it, I kept the jewelry minimal at the neckline with this necklace from Stitch Fix (old) and I wore a pair of statement earrings from DSW (new, on clearance) instead.

I wore a bracelet I picked up on one of my vacations and carried my fringe white handbag also from Stitch Fix.

For shoes, I wore my brown open-toe booties from Payless again.  Open-toe or cut-out booties are the perfect shoes for transitioning from summer to fall.

And here is the top without the jacket.  It is a thinner rayon/polyester material, so I wear a camisole underneath as it's slightly see-thru.   I love the embellishments on front, the tie closures, and the pin-tuck details.

The top is by Liz Claiborne and is available in three colors:  white, navy blue, and olive green.  They did not have the green at my store, or I would have bought that color!

The detail of the yoke is what really makes the top, but I also like the shape as well.  I prefer tops that are a looser fit for my body type.

It seems everyone keeps debating whether to wear skinnies or flares lately,  and I say "Why not both?".  I think it's fun to change it up and wear different styles of pants.  And frankly, some tops look better with skinnies and other tops look better with flares.  I don't think we have to choose one style over another, and both styles are still trending.  My flares I picked up last year at American Eagle.

Have a Great Day!  Amy

  1. A very pretty top, I need more navy blue tops in my life and have been seeking some out when shopping. I have worn jeans a few times recently even in our hot weather in the uk, but they're not really the most comfortable thing to wear. Jacqui

    1. Thanks! I agree, wearing jeans in the summer can be quite uncomfortable, yet I see so many bloggers wearing jeans all summer long.

  5. Love that navy top, and it looks great with jeans and the jacket. I don't seem to ever make it to my JCP, beginning to think if I don't write clothes shopping in my planner, it's not going to happen!

    1. Thanks Elli, you know I probably wouldn't go to JCP so often either if they didn't send me all these coupons. I'm a sucker for coupons...if I get one I have to use it.

  9. Amy, I really like this outfit! Navy and brown is such a rich color combination and so good for fall! I have both skinnies and flares in my closet, but I tend to go with skinnies more often because my flares require higher heels which I often am not in the mood for! You look amazing!

    1. Thanks Shelbee, I tend to wear skinnies more too. I like it when my cute shoes show. Flares cover the shoes up too much.
