Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women of all ages. Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme. This month's theme is "Maxi, Midi, Or Mini Fall Skirts and Dresses and was picked by Joanne.
It seems "anything goes" with fashion today. Although there are still trends, there aren't many fashion rules like "don't wear white after Labor Day" left. Most fashion is simply left up to personal choice, which to me, is a good thing as I can wear what I want and I don't have to be constantly buying new clothes to stay on-trend.
For decades, skirt length has always been dictated by the fashion gods or societal ethics. No one wore a skirt above the ankle at the turn of the century for example, or a skirt below in the knee in the sixties; but now, skirts of all lengths are acceptable from Maxi's to Midi's. Some people would say "women over a certain age" shouldn't wear skirts above the knee, but as a 62 year old woman myself, I'm gonna show you how I style ALL three skirt length options!
The Maxi Skirt/Dress
The maxi skirt length is my favorite length to wear in the fall because it keeps my legs warm. In the first photo I'm styling a sleeveless summer dress for fall by pairing it with a fall jacket.
Maxi length denim skirts are all the rage right now and the perfect skirt to wear in the fall. Here I am pairing it with a cropped sweater and tall boots.
Midi Skirt/Dress
In general, midi skirt lengths are my favorite. They cover up just enough of my leg to be comfortable. Here I am styling a fall dress with booties and a cropped cardigan.
And in this photo I've created a Southwestern fall look by adding a shacket with a southwest print on it, and suede fringe booties.
Mini Skirts/Dresses
Mini skirts are any length mid-thigh and above. This is the length I am most uncomfortable wearing, but yes, at 63 years of age I still wear mini skirts. For a short minute, I considered not wearing shorts or mini skirts anymore, but then I got hot and thought "Ah, to heck with it. If people don't like my legs, they shouldn't look at them." 😁
In the first photo, I paired my trusty old rust shift dress with a cream shacket and tall boots.
And this is my only new photo in this post. I meant to do a full fashion shoot with this outfit for this month's Ageless Style post, but we got so busy this day, it never happened. This is the only photo I got of me with this outfit. I wore this cute fall outfit to a Cranberry Festival. We have had such a hot fall this year, but I still wanted to look like fall and yet stay cool and comfy, and this is what I decided on.
My mini skirt is actually a skort; which is actually a great way to wear mini skirts if you're a bit uncomfortable to try one. I never have to worry about bending over or sitting properly in a skort. As usual, when styling for hot fall weather, my mantra is "wear colors that are fall like". So I picked a brown graphic tee to go with my neutral beige skirt and I added a felt brown hat and a crossbody bag in beige colors.
So now I've shown you that no matter what your age, you can wear skirts of any length. Which skirt length is your favorite to wear? I'd love to hear from you.

I agree. Thanks so much.
DeleteI agree about wearing shorter skirts even though my legs aren’t as beautiful as yours! Love the cute look with the skort which are just the perfect in between item!

Yes, indeed.
DeleteI love your perspective of heck.I'll just wear what I want and if people don't like my legs don't look at them.
ReplyDeleteWe need to hear that much more because it's about us!!
Love that you styled all of the different lengths!

Ha ha, yes, that is my perspective. Thanks so much.
DeleteAll of these style lengths look so good on you! I tend to feel most comfortable in a maxi skirt but I'm trying to get myself to embrace my legs more (weirdly I wear shorts without thinking about them but they are definitely on my mind when I'm wearing a skirt!).
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, shorts are about the same length as mini skirts yet people seem to think differently about mini skirts.
DeleteI love all of these and yes, if people don't like your legs, they shouldn't look at them lol! You wear all lengths beautifully and show us how they can all be practical!

Thank you!
DeleteYou've got the cutest clothes, Amy! I love that red top with the denim skirt. Super!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda!
DeleteThese all look so good on you! My favorite of these looks is the rust shift dress with tall brown boots, gorgeous color and perfect lengths on you. I don't wear dresses often but this year I found 2 midi lengths dresses that I actually enjoyed wearing in the summer. I didn't think that lengths would work for me (petite) but it was more about the shape of the dress than the lengths that didn't work before. It's the same with minis, too much volume doesn't work for me but don't mind them otherwise. Same with Maxis but I don't currently own a maxi dress/skirt.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I've had that rust shift dress forever. I'm glad you found two dresses you like!
DeleteYou are right, anything goes today for sure. Much less strict then it use to be like not wearing white after labor day. There is more room to express your personal style then there has been in the past. Love all these looks here!

Yes, it's nice not to have to follow fashion rules. Thanks so much.
DeletePS, I tried to comment on your latest blog post, but the comments are closed.
DeleteI love all your skirts, but my favorite is the cute dress in the first picture. I love how you have styled it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteYou look absolutely lovely in this outfit! 🍂 Even if it’s just one photo, it perfectly captures that effortless fall vibe — stylish yet comfy. The colors are so fitting for a Cranberry Festival, and I love how you balanced the warm-weather comfort with autumn style! ❤️
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! It was so hot that day, they weren't even able to harvest cranberries!
DeleteIt's great that you wear mini skirts. You look great in them. You have beautiful legs. I prefer to show off my legs, but I never show deep cleavage. Best regards, and I invite you to see my new painting :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I'm the same way about cleavage. I'll be over to see your new painting soon.
DeleteI don't usually wear skirts or dresses out of the house at all, but if I do, I prefer the maxi length.
ReplyDeleteOh, really? I wear them all the time, even just to run errands.
DeleteAs always, you are just beautiful and what a flare for fashion!
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you! You are so kind.
DeleteYou do look lovely in all the outfits. I prefer the skirts/dresses that fall anywhere below the knee, but do still wear a few above the knee. Have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy; that would be my preferred length to.
DeleteSo cute and you look great in all three lengths! I love to wear dresses and skirts, especially in the summer as I'm more comfortable in them than shorts when it's hot! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura. I am more comfortable in a skirt than shorts too.
DeleteVery pretty! One of my dresses has skulls on it. I bet you wouldn't like to wear my dress. But I love it. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, you are correct, I wouldn't wear anything with skulls on it. :) But I'm glad you love it and enjoy wearing it. We should all wear what we love.
DeleteYou are so cute.. love all your looks.
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you! You're so sweet.
DeleteAll great outfits Amy. I love maxi!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy!
DeleteVisiting from Talking about it Tuesday :) I LOVE all of your outfits! It's been so long since I've worn a skirt, I'm normally a dress pants kind of girl, but I really need to step up my outfit game! Also, you have allll the cute boots :) It was fun to visit you today!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad you stopped by. I have quite the collection of boots yet when it comes to getting dressed I still never seem to have just the right pair...ha ha.
DeleteThese are fabulous looks! I love the long burgundy dress - the setting is beautiful too with the cows in the background. Thanks for linking!

DeleteLove the first outfit, on-trend for fall. I used to wear all the lengths, except maxi, but lean towards knee length now. A good length for petites. Thanks for linking at #TuesdayTwirl Amy
ReplyDeleteThanks Gail.
DeleteI agree--I was never good at keeping up with the latest fashion and always buying new clothes, so the "anything goes" is my style, too! :) I love maxi, but I agree that you definitely look great in all 3. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #71 linkup. We hope to see you sharing more at #72 which opens next week. Hope it's a great week for you. :)
