Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women of all ages. Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme. This month's theme is: ""Skinny Jeans" and was picked by Jodie.
This December the Ageless Style theme is Skinny Jeans. I don't wear skinny jeans anymore, but rather than sitting this month's challenge out, I decided to show what I wear as an alternative to skinny jeans: Straight Leg Denim. But before I get into the features of straight leg denim, let's discuss the hot topic question "Are skinny jeans still in style?". Skinny jeans are still in style, but they are no longer trending. They are still sold in stores, but it appears most people are moving away from the skin clinging jean to a looser fit. If you like to wear tall boots, skinny jeans are still the best jean to wear for they fit nicely inside your boots.
I decided to move away from skinny jeans to a looser fit last year. I found that even though I purchased high quality stretch denim brands, the tightness of skinny jeans really wasn't all that comfortable and having fabric so close to my skin all the time was really warm; now that could be nice if it was a super cold day, but on a typical winter day, I was always too warm in skinny jeans. I also started to notice how skinny jeans really emphasized my aging, knobby knees which was not flattering at all, so I decided it was time for a change for me.
Other than the tightness and excess warmth, I did enjoy some aspects of the skinny jean that I didn't want to give up. I love how skinny jeans really show off my shoes. I dislike how wide leg pants hide my shoes; I want my shoes to be easily seen, heck, I have a lot of cute booties that deserve to be seen! I also liked the slim silhouette skinny jeans provide. Like most older women, my lower torso is smaller than my upper torso, so the thinnest part of my body should be highlighted, not hidden under baggy pants. So for all these reasons, I parted ways with the ultra-skinny jean and found a nice compromise in straight leg denim.
These straight leg denim jeans are "Gia Glider Slim Eco" by
Liverpool . They are actually a pull on pant, with faux barn door zippers and button waist. It is a looser fit, super comfy, the fabric doesn't cling to my thighs or knees, so they camouflage my knobby knees, yet, they are still tapered enough at the bottom to show off all my cute booties.
I wore this outfit to our church's Christmas program and also in a holiday photo shoot with my grand babies. I bought this pretty sparkly Christmas sweater last year from JCPenney at an after-Christmas sale. Holiday wear doesn't change much year from year, so after-Christmas is the best time to score a pretty holiday outfit for next year. It was so fun to pull out of my closet something new to wear with the price tags still on it!
On another note, the teenagers in our church did the worship portion of our service a couple of times the past few months, and I noticed that not a single one of them had skinny jeans on. They all wore a looser fit jean, and a few even had wide leg pants on. Not that we older women should ever look to teenagers as our fashion icons, but it is important to watch them, for they are always the first ones to set the trends and we can adapt the current trends to a look that's right for us. By observing teen fashion I think it's probably not a great idea to invest in anymore skinny jeans, as they appear to be on the way out. But, that is just my opinion. Everyone should really wear whatever they want, whatever they feel comfortable in.
And now let's see how the rest of the ladies in our Ageless Style group are styling their skinny jeans, or if like me, they found an alternative. Be sure to link up with us too!

Liverpool has the best denim and those straight jeans are so cute on you! It's the best feeling when you find something in your closet that was forgotten and never worn. Love the shimmer detail in your sweater!
ReplyDeleteJill - Doused in Pink
Yes, I love Liverpool! Thanks Jill!
DeleteWhile I'm sure you look great in both, I think straight leg jeans are much more flattering on most people than the popular skinny jeans.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteI agree in so many points. There are always pros and cons about each style/silhouette, and I too watch the young kids for a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteLove the look Amy,
XOXO

Thanks Jodie.
DeleteI really have enjoyed wearing all of the different silhouettes but I do like my skinny jeans with looser tops and to show off boots and shoes. This is a really great pair of jeans!

Yes, me too. I like to change it up, but straight leg jeans are my favs. Yes, these are great jeans. I highly recommend them.
DeleteYour outfit is lovely! I especially love that sparkly sweater. I like straight leg jeans too but I also like boot cut and flare leg too. There aren't many denim/jean looks I don't like!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, I like a lot of different denim styles too.
DeleteSounds like you found a style that works for you and these pants look great! Love the sparkle in that top as well.

Yes I did, thanks so much.
DeleteI am going to have to check out these jeans, Amy. They sound perfect to me! And, you look fabulous in them! I agree...my problem with skinny jeans is the comfort level!

I think you will really like them, especially since you like to wear leggings. They are soft and comfy like leggings.
DeleteI change between skinny's and wide leg trousers, but have to admit to wide legs being my favourites, but yes I agree shoes can't we seen with them on! Have a fun weekend Amy. Jacqui x
ReplyDeleteI think I only have one pair of wide leg jeans, and I don't think they are all that wide.
DeleteYour jeans look fabulous on you. So much so that I am going to look into getting a pair. It seems the majority of folks prefer the straight leg jeans on me. And they are the ones I reach for quite often. I am truly an hourglass shape. Big on top and bottom!! So, I think the slender but not skin tight lines of the straight legs are better for me. Off to check out your Liverpools!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Leslie, I don't think you're big anywhere, but I did think you looked best in straight leg. As one reader mentioned above, straight leg denim is the most flattering style on most people. Enjoy your Liverpool jeans, I certainly do.
DeleteUgh, may have commented already but having Internet issues so not sure!! Anyway, I love your straight denim so much I have used your link to order some. Apparently folks prefer straight on me and I only have one pair...so now I have 2!! Or will soon. I am hour glass shaped so big on top and bottom and I think the straight jeans skim over my figure better than the skin tight skinnies. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteBoth your comments came through, I just have a comment approval enabled otherwise I get so much spam, so they don't appear right away until I enable them.
DeleteAmy, love your straight leg jeans and booties! I've always favored bootcut jeans and straight-leg jeans. Never liked the skinny jeans (or leggings). I'd get a pair if I wore tall boots, but I don't have any of those right now.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteSkinny jeans certainly suit you very well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy.
DeleteBeautifully styled with the sparkly sweater! Currently my straight cut jeans are my favorites too but I want to purchase a pair of slim flare jeans. Hard to find in the right lengths though because I'm short plus I am looking to buy premium denim on poshmark so I just have to keep checking. I packed away all my true skinny jeans (donated most) but still have a pair of cigarette jeans in the closet which used to be my favorite. Even though they are considered slim straight, they seem so skinny to me and I haven't reached for them in months. I'll definitely hang on to them though!
ReplyDeletePS: Love your tree in red and white, and the icy green branches!
Thank you. I got rid of all my skinnies except for a pair of pull on jeans that I just wore yesterday with a pair of tall boots. I've never heard of slim flares. That sounds interesting.
DeleteYou look really great! Beautiful christmas tree :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYes, oversized is definitely the trend right now. It's a struggle when you are petite and the oversized makes you just look tinier.
ReplyDeleteYes, certain styles don't flatter all body types.

Thanks so much! Merry Christmas!
DeleteI kind of agree with you. I don't plan on purchasing anymore skinny jeans, but I will wear the ones I have still. They are a classic fit and look good with certain tops and shoes. I love how these look on you and that pretty sweater!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I actually just wore a pair of jean jeggings, because it was freezing outside so I wanted to wear tall boots. Merry Christmas.
DeleteI love fashion bloggers because I love fashion. I love hearing each person's perspective around trends. As women it's amazing how we become (even more) self conscious as our body changes. Thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteI agree on fashion bloggers, and yes we do become even more self conscious as our body changes.
DeleteYou make a very good case for straight jeans rather than skinnies. The clincher for me is young people. I know we like to wear what we like, but it's not a good idea to be old fashioned. Thanks for your support of the link up this year. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteYes, what the young ones are wearing are a good indicator. Merry Christmas!
DeleteI like straight leg jeans too. And I think you Christmas tree is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with Sweet Tea & Friends this month.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
DeleteThat top is so pretty and the straight leg jeans look great on you! I will never give up my skinny jeans, haha! I just love them too much! They are a staple and make up most of my denim collection :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Weekday Wear Link up! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas :)

Thank you! ha ha! Well, all things go in and out of style, so someday you may have to give them up or you will look very dated. Have A Happy New Year!
