How to Wear a Shacket with "Stylish Monday"

On the second Monday of every month a group of style bloggers and I pick a theme, style an outfit based on that theme, and then do a link up together where you can join too!  This month's theme is "shackets".   We are all sharing variations of the shacket trend.

A "Shacket" is an over-sized shirt that is worn as a Jacket.

"Shackets" first came on the scene last fall, but they are still super popular this season too!  I didn't buy one last fall, because I don't like anything over-sized on me.  I always feel over-sized clothing just makes me look bigger than I really am.  I also tend to not like plaid on me, I just can't shake that "lumberjack" feeling when I wear plaid.  However, I found this shacket on Amazon, and I ended up falling in love!

A true shacket is over-sized and the top of the sleeve usually drops below the shoulder.  But like all trends, shackets have evolved so you can pick a style that is more appealing to you.  The shacket I found on Amazon is only over-sized in the length, but not so much in the width.  I picked my usual size, a size medium, and it fits perfectly with plenty of room to wear something thicker than a tee underneath if I wanted to.

The usual rule of thumb when wearing something baggy or over-sized on top is to wear something form-fitting on the bottom.   Because of the nice, long length of my shacket, I can wear it with leggings or skinny jeans as my butt will be well-covered.  Here I have a pair of jeggings on, but I can't wait to try this shacket with a pair of black leggings too.

Another great feature of this shacket is that is QUILTED on the inside...yes, you heard me right....quilted! You don't see quilted shackets too often.  I forgot to take pictures of the quilted feature, but you can check out photos on AMAZON here!  And did I mention how SOFT it is!  Many bloggers complain that their shackets are stiff, not this one!  I could sleep in it, it's that soft!

To complete my look, I wore a beige tank under the shacket, and carried a tan saddle bag.

For footwear I chose these beige booties.

I decided to wear some fancy earrings to add a little pizzaz to the look, otherwise I'd look more like I was gardening for the day than out about town.  I didn't wear any jewelry other than earrings because I didn't think a necklace would be noticed that much, and with the long sleeves of the shacket, either would a bracelet.  So fancy earrings it was!

I have to be honest and say I was going to just buy a shacket for this blog post so I could play in the monthly challenge and then just return it.  But I ended up loving it so much, I decided to keep it!  It really is a great addition to my wardrobe, and you know what, even when shackets go out of style, this will be perfect for my country lifestyle!

And now lets see what the rest of the ladies in the group are wearing and be sure to link up with us below!

Shelbee - Shelbee on the Edge - When shackets started trending last fall, I wanted to try out the trend without spending too much money. So I hit the thrift shops and found this olive green corduroy shirt jacket that is quickly becoming an autumn wardrobe staple

Lucy - Lucy Bertoldi.com  October’s sombre vibes has me styling up this sheer, black ‘shacket’ which I love wearing over tanks or sleeveless outfits; like this tulle dress for example. It’s perfectly light, chic and edgy- whether it’s worn as a shirt, or jacket.

I’m loving the shacket trend especially since I’m always cold!  Shackets come in so many colors, lengths and styles there’s bound to be one you’ll like!  It’s the perfect layering item for fall and winter.  I love my newest one with pink and pockets! You don’t have to spend a lot on trends to give it a try!

Nicole

Nicole - High Latitude Style - While shackets are an Alaskan favorite, I have owned only two shackets so far. The first shacket was the classic Buffalo plaid skirt in red with black. I used to wear it for snow shoveling in late spring and early winter (late September, first week of October). The second one was a DIY patching project. I had bought the piece as a shirt, but it was too stiff to be worn as such. Therefore, I patched it to turn it into a shacket. I still wear it in late spring and early fall as cover-up when a cotton cardigan would be too cold and a jacket would be still too warm. Given that in Alaska the transition seasons are very short (2-4 weeks), I don’t get much wear out of my shacket.

And Me!

Amy - Amy’s Creative Pursuits -  I never thought I would like shackets because I don’t like the over-sized look on my body type, but this cute one from Amazon is over-sized in length, and not so much in width, so it gives a more fitted, polished look.

So what about you? Have you tried the shacket trend yet? Is this a trend you would be willing to try?

Have a Great Day! Amy

  1. Amy, I love this shacket on you! And I know that you were not completely on board with this trend (I wasn't really either), but how fun that you ended up loving it! That is one of the most wonderful things about our style groups and challenges. They really do expand our horizons and help us to step outside of our comfort zones. This outfit is so perfect for your lifestyle and it really does look amazing. I love the whole outfit head to toe!

    1. Thanks Shelbee. I wasn't on board with the trend because it was too specific and I didn't want to buy anything for the challenge. I know people said just style a shirt like a jacket but I don't even own any over-sized button down shirts. I've never really been a fan of button downs. But all worked out in the end, because I ended up loving my purchase and with my country lifestyle I will get a lot of use out of it. I doubt I will ever wear it in public (ha ha), but it will most likely be used in yard work.

  2. I had a shirt with a very similar print/color back in the 90's. I'm really loving this one on you and it's tempting for me to purchase. But it would be so long on my 5'2" frame so I probably shouldn't.
Love how you styled it with jeggings and booties. And love your bag!

    1. Thanks Ellie! Everyone keeps telling me they were all the rage in the 90's. I don't remember that, but I don't think I was too into fashion in the 90's cause I was too busy raising kids.

    1. Yes, this is the first one I found that wasn't too over-sized or stiff. I read the reviews before purchasing and they were spot on.

  6. I like that this 90s trend is back but it's not for me - it's good you made it work for you though. There really are versions of a trend that suit anyone who wants to give it a try :)

Hope your week is going well so far :) It's a rainy one here!

    1. I didn't think it was for me either, which is probably why I skipped the trend last fall. I do like this one and I should get a lot of use out of it.

  7. I love that you found one you love Amy. I swear, just because something is called something, doesn't make them all the same anymore. I think that's the advantage of this day and age. My mom found one on Amazon too!!!

  9. I love your plaid shacket, Amy! I ordered a similar one from Amazon. It just came and I ordered it over three weeks ago! Yikes! Anyway, I planned to style it very much as you have here--with jeggings and tan booties! The fit can truly be too oversized and I like the fit of yours. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks Darlene, you probably ordered the one I originally did but when I checked the time it would arrive (middle of November) I cancelled the order. This one came in just a few days.

  10. I don't have a shacket for the reasons you gave - I'm not keen on oversized clothes, they make me look bigger. But you're making me reconsider because that shacket looks great on you! I love the idea of a fleece lining too. Perfect for Autumn walks. Thanks for linking.
