How to Wear Tweed with Ageless Style

Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women of all ages.   Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme.  This month's theme is "Tweed" and was picked by Mirelle!

This month Mirelle chose for our team and picked "Tweed".  Although I was excited about this theme, I quickly realized that I owned nothing made of tweed.  So a shopping trip was planned and my first stop was TJMaxx as I didn't want to spend a lot of money on this challenge, but they did not have a single tweed item in their entire store.  So what does one do when they can't find an item in any brick and mortar store?  Well, check Amazon of course;  they have everything!

I looked at all of Amazon's tweed items:  blazers, skirts, handbags.  They have so many tweed items!  I really didn't want to buy a blazer as they have never been my thing.  I came so close to buying this tweed handbag, but I ultimately settled on the blazer.

I was hesitant to buy a blazer because I've purchased them in the past and never really liked the way they looked on me.  They have always been too formal or masculine for my taste.  But after seeing these photos, I'm starting to rethink that, because I really like the way I look in the blazer in the photos.

But I also have never liked blazers because in Wisconsin, they don't fit very comfortably under a parka...which is a must have survival item in the winter.  So if you want to wear a blazer, you usually have to carry it inside with you and put it on once you removed your winter coat.  Or you freeze, and go without the coat.  I chose to go without the coat this Sunday.  I took a coat with me, but left it in the car and just dashed inside church.  I did wear a black silk scarf (not pictured) to help with the chill, but I removed it once inside....so you see, this is why blazers don't work for us Wisconsin gals.

I can see wearing this blazer as a coat in more mild temperatures, which is probably what I will do as it is super cute.  I do wish it did not have a gold metallic thread woven throughout as that makes it screams "holiday" to me, but then I think if it didn't have that metallic thread it would be too black and boring.  I also don't like the bright gold buttons and I'm thinking of removing them and replacing them with black buttons.  What do you think?

Now my next problem, is tweed is often too dressy for me.  I'm a casual, country gal;   I don't need to dress up often.  I could have dressed up this blazer with black pants or skirt, heels, and the whole nine yards, but I would be so uncomfortable in it and I have no reason to dress like that.  So I decided to dress the blazer DOWN, by pairing it with straight leg denim, a plain white tee, and practical Chelsea boots.

In my photos I've shown you several ways to wear the white tee shirt:  untucked, tucked-in casually, and tied through the loop in my jeans.  Which is your favorite?

I didn't wear a lot of jewelry because I felt there was so much bling already going on in the outfit with the metallic thread and buttons, but I did wear gold hoop earrings.

If you are in the market for a new blazer, I do recommend this one. You can find it HERE and it comes in lots of other colors.  It is very well made.  It is lined on the inside.  I'm wearing a medium and it is a little too wide in the shoulders and a little too tight in the waist for me, but I have a weird body (I have narrow shoulders and a thicker waist) so I'm sure it would be a better fit on most women.

This challenge for me was all about stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new.  What I thought I wouldn't like on me, I ended up liking a lot.  Now I'm actually thinking about buying another blazer in a lighter color for spring!

So what about you?  Do you own anything tweed and do you wear blazers?  I'd love to hear from you!

Now be sure to check out what tweed items the rest of the ladies in our group are wearing and link up with us as well.

Have A Great Day!  Amy

  2. That looks so good on you.
I love the tweed look, but stick with accessories myself. I love my Harris Tweed cap!

  3. I love this whole outfit on you; it would be fabulous in fall when you don't need a heavy jacket on top or perhaps use a wrap or cape in winter? I know what you mean about layers under your winter coat or choosing to freeze (which is what I often opt for when just walking from the car to the building). It really can be such a challenge in winter. I think black buttons would look good too but I do like the gold.

  4. So glad you pushed yourself with this blazer because it looks amazing on you. I bet very few people notice the gold thread through it unless they are right next to you.
And wearing blazers is the best addition to any medical appointment because it gives you an air of professionalism and there are studies to prove youre taken more seriously that way

    1. Thanks Jodie. The gold thread is much more obvious in person than in the photos. In fact, in the reviews on Amazon most buyers didn't even see the gold thread in the photos and when they received their blazer at home they were surprised by the gold thread. That is interesting about the medical appointment theory...except I rarely go to the doctor. :)

  5. This does look really good on you. I have a couple "blazer like" spring/fall jackets but the v-neck opening/lapels have to be just right for me. I would find this "v"/lapels a bit to long for my petite self. I do like blazer style jackets though as transitional jackets. Sadly our transitional seasons are usually so short and I don't get a lot of wear out of them.
I used to have a tweed skirt from Loft but sadly I rarely wore it. It was just a bit too big on me, wish I had it hemmed for a better fit but as I rarely wear skirts I ended up donating it. I still think about that skirt.
About the buttons on this blazer. I think they look nice coordinating with the fiber in the jacket. I bought a sweater with metallic buttons on one of the shoulders. Thought about switching them out too to match the sweater, but then as I wore the sweater I got used to the buttons so now I decided to just leave them.

    1. Thank you. How interesting about the lapels. Maybe that's the reason this blazer works for me because I have a long torso. I used to have a tweed dress, but got rid of it because it was just too formal and stiff for me. Thanks for your input on the buttons. It seems the consensus is to leave them gold.

  6. I think this is a great blazer on you! And you styled it perfectly: you probably are more likely to wear it spring and fall!

  7. Amy, I love this! I know you are a little hesitant but I am obsessed over here. I love the structure. I love how its casually polished with jeans. I adore the gold buttons and the gold threading (sorry). I basically want this blazer.

  9. That tweed jacket looks really nice! I don't own any tweed myself, and now I'm starting to wonder why not.

  10. Such a cute outfit. I like the knotted tee under the blazer, too. Kind of playful and fun. I can relate to the issue of not wearing blazers because they are cumbersome under a coat. Here in EP we would rarely need to wear a blazer and a winter coat. So when I opt for a blazer I just hope it will be warm enough without a coat.

    1. Thanks Leslie! I'm surprised you'd ever need a winter coat in El Paso, but then again, when we were in Florida in the winter we saw locals wearing winter coats on an unusually cold day, and we thought it was so funny because we would never wear in winter coat in those mild temperatures.

  12. What a great tweed blazer! I used to wear them to work all the time, but like you, I don't have any tweed in my closet now. Might have to grab that blazer. It's sharp and looks so good on you.

  13. Tweed is such a versatile fabric! I was surprised at first you have none in your wardrobe, and then I thought, the only tweed things I have are blazers too so I can see why you went for this but also why you didn't have anything if blazers don't work for your climate!

  14. You look so stylish in that tweed blazer! It looks like it would be such a great transitional piece, from fall to winter, too! I also love the way you style the T-shirt multiple ways, too! So cute!

  16. Dear Amy,
I like your blazer – and especially how casually you've styled it! I think it would also look great with lighter jeans, a colorful addition like red or pink jeans/shirt, or perhaps a cognac-colored leather skirt/trousers. So there are many exciting ways to combine it.
I haven't really explored the topic of tweed yet, but after seeing your blazer, I think I actually own one myself! I bought it a few years ago in a second-hand boutique. I liked it because it's NOT as formal as other blazers – it also incorporates colors like pink or light burgundy, yellow, black, and a touch of purple! This might sound crazy, but it's not – you can see the piece in this older post – there are more detailed photos starting with collage number 9:

    1. Thank you. I actually wanted to wear it with lighter jeans but I only had wide leg jeans in a light wash and I didn't like the way they looked with a blazer. Those are all great ideas, but probably too bold for my style. Thanks for the suggestions though.

  17. I think it looks amazing on you! It is fun to try things out of our comfort zone because you never know what you may end up liking. I agree about coats over blazers, but I do have 1-2 coats that fit nicely over them which helps a lot!
