Have You Tried A Packable Jacket?

I was in TJMaxx a month or two ago and I saw this cute Calvin Klein Jacket on the clearance rack for around $50.00.  I bought it because I wanted a THIN winter coat that I could wear hiking/exercising but also for running errands.  I love my long, down-filled parka but it is way too warm to wear shopping;  I get too hot inside stores.  Anyhow, when I got home I noticed there was this nylon bag inside the pockets.  "What the heck is this for?" I wondered.  I soon realized that this charming, stylish coat had a practical purpose as well.  It compresses down to fit into a tiny little bag so you can pack it a suitcase!  Yay!  Win, win for me!  With all the traveling I do, that will really come in handy.

Another reason I bought this coat was because I tried two other thin winter coats (one from Old Navy and one from CJBanks),  I loved the thinness of both of those coats, but after a little wear the stuffing inside the coat started protruding through the seams making me look like I was covered in lint!  I only paid $25.00 for each of those coats, so I thought it was due to the "cheapness" and I got rid of them.  I thought I would try ONE MORE TIME with a higher end brand and hopefully the stuffing won't come out.  So far so good!

I wore this look to a hair appointment and running errands.  Everything I'm wearing is old (other than the coat), but I will try to link to something similar at the end of the post.

The coat is labeled to keep you warm in as little as 7 degrees.  That is perfect for Wisconsin winters.  When it get below zero, I always pull out my long, down-filled parka anyway.

I wear my black combat boots in winter more than any other boots I own.  They are so practical in the snow and ice.

My only issue with these packable coats is that I wish they were a tad bit longer.  Most of my tops/sweaters hang lower than the coat.  However, it is the perfect length for hiking/exercising in cold weather.  Maybe I can find another one that is a little longer?

  1. I don't have a packable jacket, but probably should get one! We travel here and there. Tell me more about Bible Journaling! Do you have favorite journals or products? Have you ever used a journalble?

    1. I Bible Journal in my Bible. I don't have a Bible Journal. My favorite products are stickers, gelatos, and gel pens. I have never heard of a "journalble".

  4. I purged mine when we moved, but I've been surprised at how many have them out here. I actually like that it's shorter and I can see your top underneath it.

  5. This look is just wonderful on you! I love the combat boots and I can see where they'd get a lot of wear in the winter. I really love that jacket! I love that it's not bulky and it looks great. I do see where something a bit longer would be better. If you find one, let me know! I need to go scour TJ Maxx more often when I'm looking for something. They have such great prices.

    1. Thank you! I actually looked on the Macy's website and I saw they have longer packable ones, but I won't buy one right away. I'll wait to the season is over and get one on clearance or at TJMaxx.

  7. Looks like a great find that jacket, especially for weather as cold as yours! It's nice that it's packable and travel friendly too! :) We don't have to have a lot of coats here, it's not often that cold!

Hope that you are having a good weekend! It's a really hot one here, and still a little hazy with the bushfire smoke.

    1. Thanks Mica. Oh, I can't imagine how wonderful it would be to live in a warm climate. Except for the bugs. We don't have the issues with bugs that warmer climates have.

  11. I have a similar coat in purple. I am always amazed at how warm in is despite the thinness. And it is great for traveling as it goes in a little pouch.

    1. Isn't it the truth? It keeps your core really warm, but unfortunately my legs still get cold because it's so short. I will be on the lookout for a longer one.

  13. That JCP blouse is so pretty. That print reminds me chocolates my parents used to eat. The lovely box the chocolates were packaged in. Nice memory. Will check out the link to the similar blouse you shared.

At the job I was working at last spring, I had to input clothing onto eBay storefronts. We had oodles of jackets to enter. Many packable ones. I always wondered how they held up. Being packable was a big selling point. Hard to believe something so lightweight could be very warm but I guess they are.

    1. Thank you! That is so funny about the print reminding you of chocolates but I'm glad it was a nice memory. Yes, I had no idea this was a packable jacket when I bought it. I just wanted a thinner jacket to wear in warm winter weather as I get so hot wearing a parka in stores. I've only worn it a few times so far, but so far so good. It definitely keeps me warm enough, and so far no filling is seeping through the seams. I think I need a slightly longer one though and I will keep an eye out for clearance sales at the end of winter.
