How To Wear A Monochromatic Outfit

This is an outfit I wore to church last Sunday.  The weather has warmed a tad bit, so I could actually wear a dress to church IF I had tights on.

Monochromatic outfits can come across as boring if they don't have much interest in regard to texture,  pattern, or unique details.  I avoided the boredom, by incorporating all three of those things into this outfit:  the texture is in the three different choices of fabric, the pattern is in the skirt, and the details are in the trims on the two tops.

Everything I have on is years old except the grommet tank:  that I bought on clearance at CJBanks this past fall.  But in the fast pace fashion world,  I suppose that would be considered old too. :)

The cardigan is from Ann Taylor and the skirt I received in a Stitch Fix.

Even though this is a monochromatic outfit there is so much visual interest because of the pattern in the skirt, the grommets in the neckline, and the leather trim on the cardigan.

For jewelry I chose a black and silver bracelet, silver rings, and black drop earrings.

I debated on whether to wear tall black boots or black suede booties, and I chose booties.  However, it ended up being a lot colder outside than I thought it would be (hence the indoor photos) and I wished I would have went with the tall boots as my legs were freezing!

For outerwear, I chose a faux black leather coat; also from CJBanks.

I bought this coat on clearance this year because I liked the longer length.  I own two other faux leather black jackets, but they are cropped.

As I write this post there is yet another winter storm going on.  It looks like a white-out blizzard outside!  I wish I could start showing spring outfits, but spring in Wisconsin is always late in arriving.

And for those of you who enjoy looking back at my older posts to see other ways I've worn the same item, here is a way I styled this skirt for warm weather:

And here I am in 2013 wearing the same Ann Taylor cardigan.  I told you these clothes were years old.  Geez, look how much younger I look!  What a difference five years can make!

Ha-ha!  Looking back at these old posts can be so much fun sometimes.  It's one of the many reasons I love to blog.   It preserves my memories!

Have a Great Day!  Amy

I wish spring would hurry up and get here already, no snow here but it definitely got too cold again!

    1. Thanks Elli! Yes, even though the skirt is a knit, it's thin so it works for the summer as well. And yes, about the cold. It's freezing here!

    1. Thank you! We have been discovering that we can take just as good pictures inside my bedroom as we can outside...so why freeze? haha! Actually, we planned a photo shoot along a riverwalk on this day but it was so cold and WINDY it was impossible. My hair was blowing everywhere. They would have been very comical photos.

  8. This is a great look. I love the booties and I like a longer jacket. If my jacket doesn't cover my bum when it is cold I freeze. lol

    1. Thanks Victoria! The cropped jackets are more trendy, but the longer versions are warmer and more practical.

  17. Sweet girl, you looked amazing five years ago but you are even more amazing now!! I saw this outfit in a pic on Insta but was out of town and fell behind on my blog reading. So glad to see it on your blog now. I LOVE THIS LOOK!!! I would wear this all day long. Every single detail is perfect, the bracelet, the tights, the booties!! Love it.

Also, really like the way you are taking photos in your beautifully updated bedroom. It has such a personal, friendly feel, seeing you at home.

    1. Thanks Leslie! This was one of those looks that I put together in minutes without much thought and to my surprise it ended up being one of my favorite winter outfits. Go figure. As far ass photographing in my bedroom, I've always photographed outdoors for light, but the light in my bedroom is just as nice and why not be comfortable and warm instead of shivering in the cold?
