Inspired Screen Character Fashion with Ageless Style

Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women of all ages.   Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme.  This month's theme is "Inspired by a Movie or TV Character" and was picked by Bo!

This month's "Ageless Style" theme is a fun one.  We were all directed to use a movie character as inspiration for our outfit.  I was thrilled with this idea because I have recently been introduced to the new tv series "So Help Me Todd" and although it's not a movie, the fashion of the character "Margaret" portrayed by Marcia Gay Harden has had me totally awestruck!

"So Help Me Todd" is the best new tv series of the year, in my opinion.  It is so funny!  The lead main character Todd, portrayed by actor Skyler Astin is hysterical and does such amazing comedic work.  I also love the family dynamics between Margaret (Marcia Gay Harden) and her three children:  it is so true-to-life without being overly dramatic and it is naturally funny because we can all relate.  And, most importantly, there are lots of thrills and action, so it's not a boring law show.  I'm telling you, if you're not already watching this show, you need to start, because there is something for everyone to love in this series.  The entire season is currently playing on Paramount +.

But what perhaps has excited me most about this show is THE FASHION!  Oh, my gosh, in every scene in this show Marcia Gay Harden is wearing the most AMAZING outfits.  At first I thought it was just me being attracted to the clothing of a woman in my own age group, but nope! When researching for this post, apparently everyone is awestruck by this character's fashion and you can find lots of websites of where to find "Margaret's" clothes to add to your wardrobe.

I tried to take a few photos of some of my favorite outfits right off my own tv, but it's harder than it looks.

Margaret's style is power suits, floral tops, tapered dress pants, and bold statement jewelry.  She also ALWAYS wears heels, providing quite comedic scenes as she attempts to walk in areas where heels don't make the best footwear choices.

And did I mention Margaret's coat collection?  They are swoon worthy!

Since I don't own any power suits or fabulous coats like Margaret has, I decided to imitate her other more casual style:  floral tops with tapered dress pants and heels.  Margaret loves, loves, loves floral tops and scarves, in fact, I would say she wears more floral tops than anything else on the show.  They are usually very bold colorful prints with a dramatic flair to them either in the color, print, sleeves, or neckline.

Although I don't own any floral tops as dramatic as Margarets, this old one from JCPenney comes close.  It has a wide, 3/4 length flare sleeve and a loose, and flowing hemline.

Now I would normally wear a cute flat with this outfit, but because I'm imitating Margaret. I chose a black open toe heel.  My pants are totally Margaret.  Even on her "dress-down" days Margaret always looks polished and elegant with tapered, well fitting pants.

Margaret's hand bag collection on the tv show is quite impressive too:  she often carries a coordinating, colorful bag, usually by Kate Spade.  Kate Spade bags are cute, but cost more money than I'm willing to spend on a handbag, but this knock off light red bag is a good imitation.

And no outfit of Margaret's would be complete without bold, dramatic jewelry.  I would normally wear just a necklace or earrings, not both if they are statement pieces, but once again because I'm imitating Margaret I chose a dramatic pair of drop silver earrings to wear with my bold black bar necklace.  I also wore a black and white statement bracelet.  Sorry, no close ups, it was a windy, cold day and we were in a hurry to get back in the car and warm up!  ðŸ˜€

I'm so happy I have found a beautiful woman my own age to be a fashion inspiration for me...and that's it's represented on television!  Women of a certain age usually aren't presented as fashion icons in such a positive way.  And other than being expensive, Margaret's clothes are wearable for the everyday woman.  I love the fashion of "Emily in Paris" but I would never actually wear any of those clothes, but I could see myself in any of Margaret's outfits.  In fact, I might even take advantage of some of those websites I discovered in writing this post, that link to outfits that Margaret wore in the show.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my inspired celebrity fashionista and if you're not already watching "So Help Me Todd" you will be!

Now be sure to check out which celebrity or movie/tv character the other ladies in my group were inspired by and be sure to link up with us as well.

Have a Great Day!  Amy

    1. You're welcome. I'm always looking for suggestions of good tv shows/movies myself. Yes, I definitely had to "channel" her because I don't own any of "Margaret's" high end pieces.

  4. So glad to have this show recommendation. I have seen it advertised and I think we have Paramount +, although we discontinued a few of our streaming services because with all those choices there still wasn't anything fit to watch. This show sounds really good.

And Margaret's clothes...oh, wow!! The coats. I don't really have a lot of opportunity to wear coats here so they are usually an afterthought. But coats are becoming real statement pieces. I saw a bright plaid, lightweight coat at Target a few weeks ago and almost bought it just because it was so cheerful.

Your interpretation is so perfect. I especially like the lines of the pants and shoes. That bag adds a pop of bright color. And I agree, I just can't see paying the price for a Kate Spade or Coach or Michael Kors bag. Not only can I not see paying that, I am unable to afford that!! Never have been big on status symbols.

    1. I think you will really like this show. I totally get discontinuing streaming services because so many shows today make me blush. I think Paramount has more family friendly options than other streaming services. Yes, Margaret's coats are incredible because her character lives in Portland where light weight coats are more appropriate. I have the opposite issue of you: I live in a northern climate with only two seasons: winter and summer so the only coat I need is a parka. :)

    1. I always saw this show advertised but never paid any mind to it, then I saw a lot of people talking about it in a comment section, so I figured it had to be a good show. That's how you always know a show is good...people are talking about it. Thanks so much.

  6. We have Paramount so I'm going to have to give this show a look! I think your look is quite fabulous, and I love how you stepped out of your comfort zone by channeling your inner Margaret. When Grace and Frankie was on, I googled where to buy some of Frankie's outfits! Woohoo! For being an old hippie, her clothing was not cheap! Needless to say, I didn't buy any. But, I loved the various colored trench coats Lucy Lawless' character wore in "My Life is Murder." So chic and useful!

    1. I think you really enjoy it. Thanks so much. I've had "Grace & Frankie" on my Netflix list forever, now you've inspired me to watch that. I never heard of "My Life is Murder". I will have to check that out.

  7. Hi there! Found you on the Away from Blue link up! I have not yet seen an episode of this but now I am definitely going to! I din't think a show has given me a good fashion fix since SATC in the 90s, so BRING IT ON. If Margaret is in our age group (GenX 50 something for me) all the better! BTW, that bag is ADORABLE. As a dedicated thrifter, vintage seller and "look what I found for three dollars" person, I am ALL ABOUT a great looking bargain.

    1. I have never seen a single episode of SATC but I have heard about the fashion. Margaret is 63, so just a little older than me, but I'd still wear a lot of her clothes. Thanks so much.

  10. I watch TV shows for the fashions as much as the story lines. You've done a fabulous job of creating a look based on that character's style.
