Ageless Style - "Summer Time Sporting Event"

Ageless Style is a monthly style challenge and link up for women "over a certain age".  Each month we pick a different theme and style an outfit based on that theme.

This month's theme came as a challenge for me because it is "Summer Time Sporting Event".  Anyone that knows me well knows that I detest sports.  I don't participate in them nor do I watch them, so I thought "Now what in the world am I going to do with that theme?"  After consulting with my hubby he suggested I show off some of my many pieces of activewear or "sportswear".  I said "That's exercise, not sports."  Of which he replied, "It's what athletes wear when they are practicing sports."  That made sense to me, so for this month's challenge, "Sports", picked by Jodie, I am just pulling out photos from my archives and showing a variety of active wear or "sports wear" I have worn on past travel excursions.

Water Sports /Active Swim Wear

One of the best investments I ever made in clothing was to purchase a "swimsuit" that looked like shorts and a tank top that I could wear for any event that involved water.  This suit has  shorts (with lined underwear) for a bottom and a tank with a built-bra for the top.  The fabric resists moisture and dries quickly.  You can wear it for hiking on a super hot day, or for any event where you might come into contact with water and get wet (like hiking in or around water, or kayaking).

I have worn this suit over and over again kayaking and/or where hiking around rivers.  In these pictures, I wore it hiking "The Narrows" in Zion National Park.   "The Narrows" is a challenging hike where you walk in a river for the entire hike, sometimes in water chest deep, so you definitely get wet!

I've also worn this swim suit on hot days just to hike in because it is so cool and comfy to wear as it repels moisture.

My suit is super old, but I did buy it at JCPenney and you can find similar suits there under the title "Active Swimsuits".

Sportswear For Desert Climates

The past few years, my husband and I have been exploring the west and have been hiking in some pretty hot climates.   To stay cool and dry, my favorite items to wear include a moisture repelling tank and capris or biker shorts.

In the photos below,  I am hiking at Bryce and Zion  National Parks.  Everything I have on is the Xersion brand from JCPenney.  It's a very inexpensive but high quality brand of activewear.

                       Activewear Skorts

And finally, something you would probably see me wearing all summer long, is an activewear skort.  I think these were originally made for playing tennis, but I love to wear mine hiking, especially if our hiking adventure is after church.

The skort is made of the same moisture repellent material as most activewear.  It looks like a skirt on the outside, but underneath is a pair of shorts.  I love to wear my skorts when my husband and I have an active adventure planned for after church.  Quite often we go on one of our hiking adventures on a Sunday, so I need something to wear to both church and hiking, and the activewear skort is the perfect item!

I pair my skort with an activewear t-shirt and a comfortable pair of sandals.  Once again, everything I'm wearing is from JCPenney.

  1. Oh, I love these! That is what I am sharing, active wear but your hikes are much more beautiful than my backyard. I would love to visit some of these places! My in laws are actually hiking zion and some other places this week. It looks gorgeous. I will have to remember JCpenney and I really like the active skort: great idea!

    1. Thank you! Did you know Zion was flooded a couple of weeks ago? I wonder if some of their trails are still closed. Zion is one of my favorite National Parks. So incredibly beautiful.

  2. I have only recently begun buying sportswear (for hiking); I too have a few skorts but find I really am most comfortable hiking in pants. It's awful in the heat but I have learned the hard way that I need to keep covered in the woods or I just get eaten alive. Your suit is such a great idea!

    1. I would never wear anything but sportswear for hiking, it's so much more comfortable. I use repellant in the summer when we hike, but honestly I don't think we do a lot of hiking in the summer, we hike mostly in the spring/fall. Or, we go out west where there aren't mosquitoes!

    2. The mosquitoes seem to find me year round... maybe I need to move out west!

  4. What a fun prompt and I think you nailed it. I love your adventurous hiking personality. That's so awesome. The bathing suit, the tank and shorts, that's actually brilliant. As much as I wear a good bathing suit, having something like that for kayaking and SUP would be fantastic.

  7. This is a great way to meet the theme and a lovely way to share some great hiking photos! :) I haven't bought any special gear for hiking yet - as we take the kids so our hikes are really just slow strolls on the easiest paths, haha! But maybe when they are older I'll have to bust out the activewear I wear to the physio for proper hikes!

Hope you are having a nice weekend :) Going to be a busy one for us with two kids birthday parties!

  8. These are all such great athletic wear pieces. And beautiful travel pictures!! I could have used an "active swimsuit" when we visited amusement parks, they always have some sort of rides involving water and I always got wet!

    1. That’s a good idea to wear an “active swimsuit” to an amusement park!

  9. This is the perfect spin on the theme, Amy! I love the idea of the swim shorts and tank set for hiking or doing other activities that may involve water. I have a little swim skort like that which I never wear, but now I will be more inclined to reach for it for that type of activity! Thanks for that wonderful suggestion. You look great in al of your active wear outfits!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I keep wondering how long we will be able to keep this up as were getting up there in years. I think that's the main reason we do keep doing it...we don't know how much longer we can.

  16. I am losing my mind. I thought for sure I came by...maybe I did it on my phone. I have such trouble trying to read and comment with my phone. But I am terribly embarrassed that I just realized that somehow I didn't get a comment to post. Had to reread what you said about the suit you are wearing in the first photos. I thought 'jumpsuit' but wouldn't call that a jumpsuit exactly...romper? Then I read again and saw that your suit is a bathing suit!! Genius. There are times when we are hiking and I would love to wade a creek or jump in a lake. You have found the perfect hiking pieces...or SUIT!!
I have also rediscovered skorts. They are similarly perfect for wearing out hiking and beyond. But that bathing suit has to be the best!!

    1. Oh, that's ok. You're here now. Yes, it's a bathing suit or "Active Swimsuit". It is totally ingenious and perfect for those activities where you might get wet. I even wear it to splash pads with the grandkids. Some one else commented it would be great to wear to a amusement park so when you take one of those water rides and get wet it dries quickly. I will have to remember that!
